the ARTIST
Mike Braun has built his artistic career through an extensive process of research, well informed and highly curious about creative processes and design practice, Braun has sought out culture independently. He works intentionally to try and make dense, complex projects within his visual integrity. Moving within genres and forms, each of his works dims the edges between functional and the artistic, through convoluted seductive and thought-provoking ways.
Mike has put aside the frantic practice of continually exhibiting art as if the only platform that mobilizes the art social world. Departing from the intersection of various cultural influences (Mexico, Germany, and America) his works span a broad range of categories, creating items for the contentment of observation or use while staying utterly authentic to the core of his art-making and studio practice.
In a contemporary culture that celebrates the complex interdependence of form, function and material accumulation, this Miamian artist is bemused with the crossroads between representations of the structure of paint and remixed abstract forms creating conjured up universes filled with remarkable figures and fantastic stories, creating colorful, unexpected and energetic paintings.
His tridimensional projects and objects exercise their presence beyond the idea of the white cube and intersect with architectural spaces. With certain playfulness to each work featured, their meticulous materiality and substance are only fused by their potential to serve a practical purpose and an appealing aesthetic one. Braun is part of a body of artists each of whom embraces the extensible approaches between art, architecture, and design. Such as Olafur Eliasson's, Barbara Kruger, Ed Ruscha, Tom Burr and Rirkrit Tiravanija among others. And Robert Thiele, Cesar Trasobares and Robert Huff, who laid the foundation for the now-burgeoning artistic community of South Florida.
The various cultural influences of Braun’s life is an asset to understand better that multiculturalism carved out discrete areas of high visibility but kept those areas self-contained. His artistic narrative and concepts go beyond this social construct, and his universe of abstract, realism and constructed design objects are as essential as his studio, that zone of liberty where it all begins in art, where opportunities should be, wide open, beyond territorial constraints, moving freely among identities and affiliations.
As if everything is about to begin, almost as a propelling force placing art on a genuinely cosmopolitan archetype, rendering unforeseen eyesight’s of a fresh, touching and thoughtful visual narrative, the work of Mike Braun emerges as an epiphany, as an unpredictable emanation of brilliance.
